Exercises to Increase Balance and Coordination with Adrianna
Hi everyone! I’m Adrianna the Marketing Manager at New Horizons. As we age, keeping our balance and coordination becomes increasingly important. Today I’m going to share with you a few exercises that you can easily do at home to help maintain and improve your balance and coordination.
Single Leg Stand
The first exercise is the Single Leg Stand. For this exercise you will stand straight, with your feet a few inches apart. You will slowly lift one knee and hold for 3-5 seconds, before slowly lowering your leg again. Repeat on both sides, 10 times.
It’s best to do this exercise next to a chair or countertop, so you can easily add extra support as needed.
Heel to Toe Walk
The second exercise is Heel to Toe Walk. For this exercise you walk in a straight line, with your arms raised to the side to help provide balance. Put your right foot in front of your left foot so that your right heel touches the toes of your left foot. Repeat on each side, walking for 20 steps.
Back Leg Raises
The third exercise is back leg raises. For this exercise you will stand straight, with your feet placed at shoulder width apart. Again, it is best to stand next to a chair or a countertop to provide balance assistance as needed. You will slowly lift one leg backwards, while keeping the leg straight. Only lift the leg back as far as is comfortable for you. This may only be a few inches and that is okay. Hold your leg in this position for 3-5 seconds and then slowly lower the leg back down. Repeat this on both sides, 10 times.
If you incorporate these exercises into your daily routine it will help improve your balance and coordination. Which helps you stay safer, healthier, and prevents falls.
