Foods to Power Brain Health
A healthy mind is key to helping us maintain our independence and continue to stay engaged with the world around us. While there is no magical food that can prevent cognitive decline, there are foods that can help promote brain health. Here are a few of our favorite brain-boosting foods:
Berries
Berries, such as strawberries and blueberries, are packed with antioxidants and flavonoids. These compounds help protect brain cells from damage caused by harmful free radicals. Blueberries have even been linked to improved memory and cognitive function.
Leafy Greens
Leafy green vegetables, such as spinach, kale, and broccoli are nutritious powerhouses—filled with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. With high levels of vitamin K and folate, these veggies help reduce the risk of cognitive decline and fuel your brain.
Fatty Fish
Salmon, trout, and sardines are all fatty fish that have an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3s are a vital component of brain cell membranes and have been linked to both increased cognitive function and reduced risk of mental decline.
Whole Grains
Complex carbohydrates found in whole grains provide a steady supply of glucose, which is the primary source of energy for the brain. These whole grains are packed full of fiber, vitamins, and minerals, providing a sustained release of energy throughout the day—promoting better focus and mental clarity.
Dark Chocolate
Cocoa beans are filled with antioxidants and have been associated with improved blood flow to the brain. Dark chocolate (in moderation) can be a great treat that is also beneficial for your brain health. Be sure to choose a dark chocolate that is at least 70% cocoa content to really reap in its benefits.
There are many ways to prioritize your health—from getting enough sleep to staying hydrated. Eating a healthy and well-balanced diet is a great way to promote good health, especially if you can incorporate these brain boosting foods into your diet as well.
