Heart Month

It is heart month, which is annually celebrated by the American Heart Association. A healthy heart relies on many factors, but diet and exercise play a vital role. These are two heart health things that you have control over, unlike genetics! The American Heart Association is calling it, “Healthy For Good: a revolutionary movement to inspire you to create a lasting change in your life one small step at a time. The approach is simple: eat smart, add color, move more, be well.” Add color to your diet. Eat the colors of the rainbow in a salad, or on your dinner plate. Buying produce and fruit in bulk and freezing it can help you save money. Take time in the summer to pick blueberries, strawberries, and freeze them for smoothies all year round. Eating with the seasons is helpful when eating on a budget, as what is in season in your area will be much cheaper than imported goods. Read your labels for added sugar and salt, avoid purchasing these items and go for fresh fruits and vegetables. Your heart will be happy to cut out added sugar, especially the evil high fructose corn syrup! Move more. The American Heart Association says to move at least 150 minutes a week. Warming up before exercise is vital in preventing injury. Get the right equipment too! Many people aren’t fond of the gym, so bring it to you. Purchase a couple weights, proper attire, and a yoga mat. Do what works for you. I find that if I write it on my schedule, I make the time for it and I don’t come up with excuses. Even if I don’t do tough cardio, I make the time to stretch. Our bodies feel so great after we take good care of it. Not only that, a healthy and happy heart after mediation or just sitting in silence goes a long way!
