Hello, my name is Joanna, I’m a New Horizons family caregiver. I’d like to talk to you about becoming a professional Caregiver for your family member or friend. First I’d like to share about my personal experience.
I was working full-time when my parent’s health began to decline. My mom’s dementia advanced and my step-dad was prescribed at-home dialysis. I found myself needing to spend more and more time attending to their needs. I soon realized they needed someone to care for them full-time and with my work it was impossible to provide all of the care that they needed. And my mom was resistant to having a Caregiver come in and my step-dad’s home dialysis required special skills. So I came to the conclusion that the best thing for my family was to become their full-time Caregiver.
I began looking into my parent’s long-term care insurance policy and we discovered that I could be employed by New Horizons as a professional Caregiver for both of my parents. This meant that I could attend to their care needs full-time, without giving up my income.
So many people including siblings, adult children, neighbors and friends, even parents of adult children are working as unpaid Caregivers for their loved ones. In fact, every year nearly 40 million people are providing unpaid care in the US. If you are in a similar situation, give us a call. New Horizons Care Managers can help check on your insurance benefits or connecting you with community resources that can enable you to be paid for the incredible, valuable work that you’re doing. If it seems like a good option for you and your family, I really encourage you to reach out to New Horizons and learn about your options.
