Osteoporosis
What is it?
As defined by the National Osteoporosis Foundation: It is a disease of the bones that happens when you lose too much bone, make too little bone, or both. Osteoporosis means “porous bone” so the more porous one’s bones are, the less density there is to them making them weaker and more likely to break.
By an individual’s early 20’s, his' or her's bones have reached their maximum strength and density. This is known as Peak Bone Mass. This is important to know while in the younger years so one can try to prevent early bone loss and reduce injuries that could lead to more serious problems later on in life.
How common is osteoporosis? About 54 Americans have it; approximately one in two women and up to one in four men tend to have lower bone density which increases their risk of developing this condition. Osteoporosis is often called a silent disease because you can’t feel your bones getting weaker, which is why it is also one of the scariest to have. If you break a bone while being 50 years of age or older, it is highly recommended that one see their primary care physician to evaluate their bone density. By doing this, a doctor can see if you have the onset of osteoporosis, or if you have it already, to see the severity of the disease. If you are experiencing height loss or if your spine is curving, be sure to talk to your doctor or another healthcare professional right away as the disease may already be advanced. This is why it is important to have annual physicals with your doctor to make sure things like bone density are being properly measured to prevent or lessen the risk of diseases like osteoporosis.
