Hi, my name is Kathileen and I’m the Corporate Communications Manager for New Horizons. Today I wanted to talk to you about senior independence. Living independently and with dignity is a goal that most of us strive for as we grow into our older years.
With the many social opportunities and technological advancements in today’s society, it’s easier than ever to be active and stay connected to the outside world while remaining in the comfort of our own homes.
Here are a few things you can do to stay independent as we age in place:
Get Organized!
Decluttering your environment is not only good for your mental health, it is an effective and simple way to increase safety while decreasing the risk of falls. Tackling messes and organizing your belongings not only removes stress from daily tasks, it assists you in navigating through your day and it can also show your loved ones that you are safe to remain at home.
Get Tech Savvy!
With today's vast array of technology options, staying safe and connected has never been easier. Upgrades such as motion sensing lights inside and out can assist in making navigation through our homes at night safer and easier.
Just as cell phones and tablets have put connecting with family, friends, and the outside world at the tip of our fingers, new technologies such as Smart Speakers can
have the added benefit of providing Voice Activated Medical alerts. You can stay connected with family and friends, alert medical professionals, and listen to your favorite music all within the same device.
Stay Active!
Improving your overall physical, mental and emotional health not only helps you feel better day to day, but it can be a crucial step in staying connected and independent as we age. Local community senior centers offer everything from online educational opportunities, adult health and fitness classes, outdoor activities, and even trips or cruises around the world.
Today I've shared just a few of the many opportunities and ways seniors can remain active and connected while aging in place. I hope you find these tips useful as you continue to strive to maintain your independence long into your future years.
